Shannon Switzer Swanson is a waterwoman, marine social ecologist, and photojournalist from California. She is a National Geographic Explorer and doctoral student in Stanford's Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment & Resources. Swanson works with small-scale fishers in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, studying how culture and emotion shape the way they use their marine resources and how that affects the ecosystems on which they depend.
